This block tutorial shows how to make the Anvil block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.
Anvil Block

(1) 4″ square
(2) 2 1/2″ squares
(2) 2″ squares
(1) 4″ square
(2) 2 1/2″ squares
(2) 2″ squares
Piecing
Referring to the “Half-Square Triangles (HST): Two at a Time Method” instructions in the Reference section of your Quilter’s Planner, make (2) 3 1/2″ HSTs using the 4″ squares. Press toward the darker fabric.
Referring to the “Half-Square Triangles (HST): Two at a Time Method” instructions in the Reference section of your Quilter’s Planner, make (4) 2″ HSTs using the 2 1/2″ squares. Press toward the darker fabric.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew together a 2″ square and a 2″ HST. Press away from the HST. Row A should measure 2″ x 3 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew together a 2″ HST and 2″ square. Press away from the HST. Row B should measure 2″ x 3 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).
Nesting seams, sew Row A and Row B together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open. Sub-block should measure 3 1/2″ square.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew together a sub-block and a 3 1/2″ HST. Press toward the HST. Row should measure 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).
Nesting seams, sew rows together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open.
The finished Anvil Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
