This block tutorial shows how to make the Churn Dash block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.

Churn Dash Block

Number of Fabrics: 3 | Number of Pieces: 13

(2) 3″ squares
(1) 2 1/2″ squares
(4) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles

(2) 3″ squares

(4) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles

Piecing

Referring to the “Half-Square Triangles (HST): Two at a Time Method” instructions in the Reference section of your Quilter’s Planner, make (4) 2 1/2″ HSTs using the 3″ squares.

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew (2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles together along the long edge. Press toward the darker fabric. Sub-block should measure 2 1/2″ square. Repeat to make (4).

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew (2) HSTs on either side of a sub-block. Press away from the HST. Row A should measure 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew (2) sub-blocks on either side of a 2 1/2″ square. Press toward the sub-blocks. Row B should measure 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.

Nesting seams, sew Rows A and Row B together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open.

The finished Churn Dash Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
