This block tutorial shows how to make the Courthouse Steps block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.
Courthouse Steps Block
Number of Fabrics: 5 | Number of Pieces: 9
(1) 2 1/2″ square
(2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(2) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
(2) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
(2) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles
Piecing
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles to the sides of the 2 1/2″ square. Press seams out from center. Sub-block should measure 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to the top and bottom of the previous sub-block. Press seams out from center. Sub-block should measure 4 1/2″ square.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to the sides of the previous sub-block. Press seams out from center. Sub-block should measure 6 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles to the top and bottom of the previous sub-block. Press seams out from center.
The finished Courthouse Steps Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
