This block tutorial shows how to make the Propeller block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.
Propeller Block
Number of Fabrics: 4 | Number of Pieces: 13
(2) 3 1/2″ squares
(4) 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles
(2) 3 1/2″ squares
(4) 1 1/2″ squares
(1) 1 1/2″ squares
Piecing
Referring to the “Half-Square Triangles (HST): Two at a Time Method” instructions in the Reference section of your Quilter’s Planner, make (4) 3″ HSTs using the 3 1/2″ squares. Press toward the darker fabric.
Using a 1/4″ seam, sew together a 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangle and 1 1/2″ square. Press toward the darker fabric. Sub-blocks should measure 1 1/2″ x 3″. Repeat to make (4).
Using a 1/4″ seam, sew together two HSTs and a sub-block. Press seams away from HSTs. Row A should measure 3″ x 6 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).
Using a 1/4″ seam, sew together two sub-blocks and a 1 1/2″ square. Press seams away from the center block. Row B should measure 1 1/2″ x 6″.
Nesting seams, sew Rows A and Row B together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open.
The finished Propeller Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
