This block tutorial shows how to make the Quarter Log Cabin block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.

Quarter Log Cabin Block

(1) 2″ square

(1) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle
(1) 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle

(1) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangle
(1) 1 1/2″ x 5″ rectangle

(1) 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle
(1) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle

(1) 1″ x 2″ rectangle
(1) 1″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle
(1) 1″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle
(1) 1″ x 4″ rectangle
(1) 1″ x 5″ rectangle
(1) 1″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle

Piecing

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1″ x 2″ rectangle to the top of the 2″ square. Press toward the darker fabric. Sub-block should measure 2″ x 2 1/2″.

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the 1″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle to the right hand side of the previous sub-block. Press toward the darker fabric. Sub-block should measure 2 1/2″ square.

Following the same order (sew to top, press, sew to right side, press), sew the 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ and 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles onto the previous sub-block. Sub-block should measure 3 1/2″ square.

Following the same order (sew to top, press, sew to right side, press), sew the 1″ x 3 1/2″ and 1″ x 4″ rectangles onto the previous sub-block. Sub-block should measure 4″ square.

Following the same order (sew to top, press, sew to right side, press), sew the 1 1/2″ x 4″ and 1 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles onto the previous sub-block. Sub-block should measure 5″ square.

Following the same order (sew to top, press, sew to right side, press), sew the 1″ x 5″ and 1″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles onto the previous sub-block. Sub-block should measure 5 1/2″ square.

Following the same order (sew to top, press, sew to right side, press), sew the 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles onto the previous sub-block.

The finished Quarter Log Cabin Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
