This block tutorial shows how to make the Split Nine Patch block as shown in the 2019 Quilter’s Planner.

Split Nine Patch Block

(3) 3″ squares
(2) 2 1/2″ squares

(1) 2 1/2″ square

Piecing

Referring to the “Half-Square Triangles (HST): Two at a Time Method” instructions in the Reference section of your Quilter’s Planner, make (6) 2 1/2″ HSTs using the 3″ squares. Press toward the darker fabric.

Using a 1/4″ seam, sew together a 2 1/2″ square and 2 HSTs. Press seams away from the center HST. Row A should measure 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).

Using a 1/4″ seam, sew together 2 HSTs and a 2 1/2″ square. Press seams away from the HSTs. Row B should measure 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. Repeat to make (2).

Nesting seams, sew Rows A and Row B together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open.

The finished Split Nine Patch Block should measure 6 1/2″ square.
